Local Farmer’s Market Roundup

I’ve been trying to decide whether or not to join a CSA this year. Last summer I participated in the City Fresh program through LEAF which stands for Lakewood Earth and Food. I might be doing City Fresh again this year. City Fresh is great particularly because you can purchase your share one week at a time for as many or as few weeks as you like. I was very happy with my City Fresh shares last summer. I’d love to try Fresh Fork CSA like my good pal over at LeadPaintCookbook. Fresh Fork seems like an excellent CSA because it offers not only produce but also local eggs, dairy, meat and other products from time to time such as pizza dough or fresh pasta. (They also have vegan and vegetarian options.) The problem with Fresh Fork is that they don’t offer a week-to-week option only pre-paid-in-full or monthly payment options. I just don’t usually have my finances together enough to prepay for my groceries a month at a time, let alone pay for 22 weeks up front. Both Fresh Fork and City Fresh seem to offer a good quality local product and a good quantity for the price. The quantity and variety is much greater with a CSA than you would find in the produce sections at most grocery stores.

Since I can’t make up my mind about joining a CSA right now, I’ve decided to try to visit at least one local farmer’s market each week in addition to regular trips to the West Side Market. I did a little homework to learn about the various farmer’s market options in my area and sorted through a number of lists online. I organized a list by days of the week beginning with Sundays. As I visit these markets I will post reviews and pics. Tonight I’m going to check out the Tremont Farmer’s Market.

New Camera!

Santa got me a new camera so pictures will look a whole lot better from here on out.  Also, I will (hopefully) be posting more often now.  Using the iphone camera was seriously bumming me out and may have affected my motivation to create new Whiteout posts.  But listen folks, this is a cheap camera so don’t go expecting too much.  O.K.?
